Electric mobility – more than just switching from combustion to electric drives

The goal of forward-thinking mobility is clear: Reducing emissions to zero. The basis for achieving this goal is switching to electric motors. Doing so, however, will require a fundamental change in vehicle architecture. In order to help actively shape this transformation, Knorr-Bremse is overhauling many parts in its product portfolio, and is also focusing on new growth areas in the Zero Emission Vehicles (ZEV) sector.

The roles of many existing vehicle components will change as part of the transformation to electric mobility. Energy efficiency and the ability to integrate individual components will be a much more important focus than they have been in the past. Electric vehicles must use available energy more carefully in order to approach the ranges offered by combustion-engine vehicles, and in order to minimize charging cycles. Because they can be activated digitally, individual components can be integrated into overall vehicle processes much more than in the past, opening up new possibilities. Reducing noise and particle emissions are also becoming more important. Knorr-Bremse is taking on all of these challenges.

Braking system with new profile of requirements

In addition, the role of the braking system is changing. Thanks to the retarding power of e-drives, brakes are not in use for longer periods of time; however, in extreme situations they need to be able to deliver their full power without a delay. This results in new challenges for design and for the materials used.

Similar changes are also affecting other product areas. Knorr-Bremse is making a key contribution to the future of electric vehicles through optimized air supply and braking control, including adapted brake blending, redundant on board power supply and intelligent wheel brake concepts. In the air supply area, for instance, we are working to minimize CO2 and particle emissions and are focusing on noise-optimized components. We are also adding new products to our product portfolio in the course of this transformation, such as the Brake Resistor System.

Separate area for the electric transformation

To consistently advance these changes, Knorr-Bremse has created a separate innovation unit for e-mobility, the eCUBATOR. Here, Knorr-Bremse experts develop innovative and intelligent solutions for electric commercial vehicles with a comprehensive system approach.
