Electric Power Steering – Maintenance-free power-on-demand steering for the future of vehicle control

Electric Power Steering (EPS) from Knorr-Bremse sets new standards for performance and efficiency in steering. The completely redesigned system architecture of electrically supported steering combines proven effective principles with the latest technology. By doing so, EPS significantly improves energy efficiency while reducing overall costs. It increases steering comfort, while at the same time paving the way to electromobility and autonomous driving.

Compared to most hydraulic steering systems available on the market, EPS from Knorr-Bremse works on a power-on-demand basis: It only consumes power when the steering angle is changed. A special solution patented by Knorr-Bremse ensures that the steering system still activates without a delay. The heart of the system consists of a motor and a pump which are both fully integrated into the steering unit and controlled by an ECU.

Modular, compact and maintenance-free

The EPS system has a modular structure. Depending on the vehicle application, the individual components can be assembled flexibly and adjusted to different installation areas and vehicle classes.

EPS steering is designed as a highly integrated plug-and-play system for vehicle manufacturers. It is delivered pre-configured to the assembly line. Once it is connected to the power supply of the vehicle, the system is ready for use and is maintenance-free from there throughout the entire life cycle. There is no need to re-lubricate it, replace wear parts or hydraulic oil, which reduces overall costs and improves sustainability.

Power for two

EPS can achieve steering forces of up to 8.5 kNm in regular configurations. In vehicle configurations with especially high axle loads that require two driven front axles, EPS from Knorr-Bremse allows for the connection of an auxiliary hydraulic cylinder. This is implemented using a fully-integrated motor and pump that are controlled by an ECU. In this way, the EPS also delivers higher forces for adjusting the steering angle.

Key benefits:

  • Energy efficient, power-on-demand steering
  • Excellent flexibility in adjusting to the available space and vehicle type, thanks to the modular design.
  • Maintenance-free
  • Plug-and-play installation
  • Based on proven individual components with outstanding durability.
  • Steering capability even in case of a complete outage of the vehicle-side power supply.
  • Support for a hydraulic auxiliary cylinder for extremely high front axle loads or two driven front axles
  • Developed for SAE automation level L2 and modular expansion capacity for L4+
  • Supports steer-by-brake function as an additional level of redundancy to implement mission complete solutions
  • Fulfills ISO 26262 as well as protected against cyber attacks
