As part of a vehicle's overall compressed air management, air treatment plays a key role in the functional safety of the pneumatic system. The Knorr-Bremse product range extends from simple air dryers to electronic air treatment systems with an integrated parking brake.
The compressed air provided by the compressor must be treated before it can be supplied to the various on-board consumers. The responsible air treatment systems can take on a number of other important tasks at the same time.
Air drying
The ambient air contains a certain amount of water vapor. As the compressor forces the air into a smaller volume, the air gradually loses its ability to hold this water vapor. Compression therefore produces a significant amount of condensation. To protect the compressed air system from corrosion or freezing, the compressed air must be dried. Knorr-Bremse offers air dryer cartridges for this purpose. They preserve the efficiency of the individual components and extend the service life of the system as a whole.
Key benefits:
- Robust design
- Filter cartridges developed and produced in-house

Oil separation plus air drying
As well as water vapor, the compressed air contains residues of compressor oil. In particular, this oil can damage the elastomers used in the various valves of the compressed air system. The Oil Separator Cartridge (OSC) from Knorr-Bremse offers an efficient solution for separating liquid and gaseous oil from the compressed air before the air is dried. This substantially increases the service life of the overall system.
Key benefits:
- Additional separation of particles emitted by the compressor
- Filtering out the oil before the desiccant increases the cartridge service life and extends desiccant performance
Integrated air processing
The Air Processing Unit (APU) from Knorr-Bremse combines all the functions of an air dryer and a multi-circuit protection valve in a single unit. For example, when system pressure is reached, the APU can activate the compressor's energy-saving function. Knorr-Bremse offers APUs as a flanged solution or as a compact monoblock version for particularly small installation spaces.
Key benefits:
- Extremely compact
- Versatile configuration
Electronic Air Control
Electronic Air Control (EAC) from Knorr-Bremse combines pneumatics with an intelligent control system. The EAC manages the supply to the brake circuits and thus to all other on-board consumers. With its intelligent control of the compressor with clutch, the EAC can achieve fuel savings of over 1,000 liters per year. At the same time, the intelligent control eliminates the need for dedicated compressed air storage for the trailer and parking brake. A forecast of the next service interval for the air dryer cartridge is another integrated feature.
Key benefits:
- Intelligent control of various fuel-saving functions
- NEO System Diagnostics with guided maintenance steps
- Unique bayonet cartridge for quick and reliable changing
EAC with integrated electronic parking brake (EAC2.5)
Alongside pure Electronic Air Control (EAC) functions, Knorr-Bremse also offers integration of the electronic or pneumatic parking brake into the EAC unit. Vehicle manufacturers thus benefit from greater freedom when designing the instrument panel layout. Pneumatic components no longer need to be installed in the driver's cab. Furthermore, installation space requirements and complexity are reduced.
Integrating the electronic parking brake into the EAC guarantees the lowest system costs compared to any other combination of air processing unit and pneumatic parking brake. It also enhances safety. The EAC with integrated EPB requires fewer compressed air pipes, which also lowers the risk of pipe defects. The vehicle operator benefits from the automatic activation and release of the parking brake along with additional safety functions.
Key benefits:
- Lowest system costs
- Compact design
- New safety functions (including automatic activation and release of the parking brake)
