Traction inverters – combining functions for traction and battery charging

Traction inverters convert the power from a battery, a fuel cell or an overhead line into three-phase current for the drive motors of trains, e-buses and commercial vehicles. Knorr-Bremse inverters combine the power electronics for traction with the technology required to charge the batteries in a single system. Two functions, one device.

Traction inverters from Knorr-Bremse are available in two versions: with a single output they can supply one drive unit, with a dual output two drive units. In the dual version, two 200 kW outputs are dedicated to traction. Thanks to their compact design and low overall weight, the Knorr-Bremse inverters offer some of the highest power ratings on the market.

Complete power package for electric vehicles

The inverter is complemented by the traction control unit (TCU). It optimizes the efficiency, driving stability and serviceability of the overall system. It includes the software for functions such as brake blending and individually controllable axle torque. In addition, the energy control unit (ECU) improves the energy management of the onboard electrical system.

The entire e-kit can be used as a subsystem in the vehicle or expanded into a complete electrical system.

Key benefits:

  • Fully meets the requirements of the ISO 26262 standard for safety-related electrical systems in motor vehicles.
  • Lower energy consumption: the smart control system boosts powertrain efficiency by 4.5 percent.
  • Lower maintenance costs: the highly dynamic active damping of powertrain torsional vibrations not only cuts maintenance costs and noise emissions but also reduces axle and transmission wear by delivering a smoother ride.
  • Faster acceleration with anti-skid protection: up to 50 percent faster acceleration is achieved through optimized torque compensation when the vehicle slides or skids. This technology improves driving stability and reduces tire wear.
  • High gradeability: the traction inverter from Knorr-Bremse optimizes hill start acceleration, allowing gradients of over 20 percent to be climbed.
