Compressors – pressurizing air for commercial vehicles

The compressor is the beating heart of the compressed air system. It pressurizes ambient air to power the vehicle’s on-board pneumatic equipment.

With a wide range of models on offer, Knorr-Bremse provides finely tuned solutions for virtually every situation. Unlike compressors optimized for stationary use, Knorr-Bremse units are extremely resistant to adverse environmental conditions. They withstand extreme heat, cold, humidity and most importantly the constant vibrations of vehicles covering millions of road miles.

Piston compressors – tremendously robust

The most common design for heavy commercial vehicles is the piston compressor. Depending on the installation space available and the volume of air required, Knorr-Bremse offers models with different stroke volumes, a 1- or 2-cylinder design and flange or foot mounting. As a rule, piston compressors are rigidly connected to the drive motor that powers them.

Key benefits:

  • Robust design
  • Proven technology
  • Specific solutions for a wide range of applications
  • Long service life due to extremely low oil carry-over
  • The High Performance Energy Saving System (HP-ESS) significantly reduces fuel consumption when the compressor is not required to produce compressed air (off-load mode).

Compressor with clutch – saves fuel by decoupling

The Knorr-Bremse compressor with clutch can be decoupled from the drive motor as soon as sufficient compressed air is available. This saves fuel by reducing the load on the drive unit. Thanks to these idle phases, the compressor with clutch also minimizes oil carry-over into the compressed air system.

The coupling and decoupling process is intelligently managed by the Electronic Air Control (EAC). Working in combination, these two components can achieve fuel savings of up to 1,250 liters per year in long-distance operation. Moreover, the cleaning systems have a longer service life due to the reduced oil carry-over.

Key benefits:

  • Fuel savings of up to 1,250 liters/year
  • Minimal oil carry-over
  • Long service life
  • Up to 3 million coupling cycles possible

Compressor with optimized thermal management

Thanks to their improved thermodynamics, Knorr-Bremse's water jacket-cooled compressors are ideally suited to applications involving long periods of operation. Customers benefit from reduced oil carry-over (less than 0.2 g/h) and a four-fold reduction in carbon deposits. This ensures maximum purity of the compressed air, which in turn increases the reliability of the entire system. Among other applications, this technology can be used to cost-effectively replace two-stage compressors without any significant disadvantages.

Key benefits:

  • Optimum compressed air purity
  • Boosts service life of cleaning systems
  • Cost-efficient alternative to two-stage compressors
  • Very long service life

Compressor for electric vehicles

For use in electric or hybrid vehicles, Knorr-Bremse has developed a screw-type compressor driven by an electric motor. It offers an ideal solution for vehicles with medium to high air requirements (e.g. city buses), while also ensuring low noise and vibration levels. Its compact design offers planning flexibility, as it can be installed either on the roof or under the floor.

Key benefits:

  • High flow capacity
  • Optimally adjusted noise profile for electric and hybrid vehicles
  • Water-cooled permanent magnet synchronous electric motor (PMSM) with integrated inverter
